Our mission is to guarantee a fair and speedy judicial process in such a manner that it preserves both the dignity and rights of the defendant, as well as the citizens of Kansas City, Kansas.

Judge Maurice J. Ryan

The Honorable Maurice Ryan received his law degree from Washburn Law School in 1978.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1975.  A lifelong resident of Wyandotte County, he graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1971.

After graduating from law school, Judge Ryan engaged in the private practice of law from 1978 until 1986. He served as a municipal court prosecutor starting in 1983, and then Assistant City Attorney until 1999 when he was appointed to the bench.

Judge Ryan is a member of the Wyandotte County Bar Association and the Kansas Municipal Judges Association.  He has served in multiple leadership positions in both organizations and served as President of the Municipal Judge’s Association in 2002-2003. He has also served on the Kansas Board of Indigent Defense Services, serving as Chairman in 1985-1986 and 1993-1994.

Judge Ryan has co-authored a “Criminal Defense Manual” published by the Kansas Bar Association in 1985.  He also co-authored an article with Kathleen Lynch in the Kansas Bar Journal “Notice of Claims – Easy to Follow but Timing is Important” in 1995. He has been a frequent speaker at Naturalization ceremonies in the United States District Court. He has made several presentations to the Kansas City Kansas Police Citizen’s Academy.
