Educating on the Importance of Fire Safety and Prevention

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD), is excited to partner with the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), to promote Fire Prevention Week during October 6-12, 2024. This year’s theme for the week is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You.” The KCKFD will strive to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in homes and businesses.

“Nearly 4,000 people die at the hands of fire in the United States each year. Sadly, most fire victims are lost in their homes when an unwanted fire strikes,” said KCKFD Fire Chief Dennis Rubin. “The number one contributing factor to this grim statistic is fires that occur at night (during bed hours) go undetected until it is too late to escape unless the family has a properly installed, operating and maintained smoke alarm. I urge everyone to take the time to test their home smoke alarms and repeat the same smoke alarm test at least once every month thereafter. With your help, the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department is committed to preventing Harm in our Community”.

During the week, members of the KCKFD will provide resources to amplify the message of fire safety and prevention by understanding how to properly install, test, and replace smoke alarm systems.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips and Guidelines

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
  • Make sure smoke alarms meet the direct needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Make it a habit to test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
  • Remember to replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
