The Unified Government’s Public Works Solid Waste Management team has launched a Free Mulch Pilot Program at the Recycling & Yard Waste Center, 3241 Park Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. This initiative provides Wyandotte County residents with free, natural mulch made from locally collected yard waste. Unlike commercial mulch sold at retail stores, this mulch is untreated and dye-free, making it an eco-friendly option for landscaping and gardening.

Residents interested in picking up mulch must bring proof of residency, such as a BPU bill or driver’s license. Free mulch is available from Thursday, April 10, to Saturday, October 25 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The Recycling & Yard Waste Center is closed on April 18 & 19, June 19, July 4, and November 27 & 28 in observance of holidays

“The Free Mulch Pilot Program is a great way to give back to the community while reducing waste,” said Diana Miles, Solid Waste Manager. “By repurposing yard debris collected at the center, we’re not only helping residents improve their gardens but also supporting sustainability efforts in Wyandotte County.”

Mulch will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and residents are responsible for loading and hauling their own mulch.

In addition to the Free Mulch Pilot Program, the Recycling & Yard Waste Center continues to accept a variety of materials, including glass, mixed paper, cardboard, plastics (#1-7), food and beverage cans, grass clippings, leaves, branches (up to 4 feet in length), and stumps (up to 12 inches in diameter).
