The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) is now accepting applications for the Firefighter Trainee Program. This program allows someone between the ages of 18 and 25 to be paid to obtain their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training and become a part of the KCKFD.

"Joining our Firefighter Trainee program isn't just a career path; it's a commitment to your growth," said Assistant Chief of Training Scott Schaunaman. "If selected, we'll not only pay your salary but also invest in your education by sending you to EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) school. Following the attainment of your certification, dive into our 16-week fire academy—a comprehensive training ground where you'll master the art of saving lives, mitigating hazards, and safeguarding property. Your journey begins with us, where every step prepares you to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others."

About the Trainee Position

The Firefighter Trainee will enter an accelerated EMT training program with the Kansas City, Kansas Community College so that they may meet the minimum requirements necessary in order to enter the Fire Academy as a recruit firefighter when practical and feasible. The KCKCC EMT courses will be paid for and funded through the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department. The firefighter trainee must pass the class with a minimum score of a 2.0 grade point average, and meet the KCKCC criteria for state testing.

Upon completion, the firefighter trainee will then be required to test for Kansas State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification as prescribed by the Kansas City Kansas Fire Department. This is a fantastic opportunity to earn the qualifications you need to become a firefighter!
