Across the state of Kansas, taxing jurisdictions are working on their upcoming fiscal year budgets. In Wyandotte County, our property taxes are distributed to multiple taxing jurisdictions that oversee our infrastructure, community services, libraries, schools, water systems, and our local community college. The Unified Government collects these taxes on behalf of all taxing jurisdictions within Wyandotte County although each jurisdiction has its own governing body.

With increasing property values, the amount of money all taxing jurisdictions expect to collect in 2024 will increase, without any additional taxes. By Kansas state law, when the governing body anticipates that it will exceed the revenue neutral rate, i.e. it will take in more money than the past year, it must hold a public hearing for the community to weigh in and provide feedback. This week, taxpayers in Wyandotte County will receive a mailed notice with the upcoming hearing dates for all jurisdictions that plan to exceed revenue neutral.

Unified Government Administrator's Budget to be Presented August 10

On Thursday, August 10, during a special session of the Unified Government Commission, County Administrator David Johnston will present the proposed 2024 budget for consideration. Following an extensive engagement process this spring, this budget addresses the structural deficiencies in our city general fund, reduces expenses across departments, and prepares the Unified Government for continued transformation toward fiscal sustainability. Community members are invited to attend the budget hearings on August 28, 2023 at 7PM to weigh in on the priorities for 2024.
